The Original Hammock Shop Village

Located in Pawleys Island, The Hammock Shops Village is a rare treasure of a shopping center that offers a mix of Lowcountry nature, history, shopping, and dining. It’s more than shopping, it’s a Carolina experience. Bring the family to spend the day walking the streets and browsing what they have to offer. The village also has a fun-filled playground for the kids. As a day trip, you can enjoy the historic demonstrations and shop around. But, stop by in the evening to enjoy fresh-caught crabs and oysters for dinner or perhaps enjoy a wine tasting.

From historical invention to modern enjoyment, from day-trip to date-night, from a shopping spree to just walking through the streets, The Original Hammock Shops Village has it all. Their commitment to southern tradition and ultimate comfort is only a reflection of their signature rope hammocks, originally designed by Joshua John Ward.

Ward was a native South Carolinian and a riverboat captain. He ferried rice and supplies along our expansive coastline in the late 1800s. As he moved from town to town, mostly in the Georgetown and Waverly Mills areas, he found that the typical mattresses at the time were uncomfortable. Even though they were stuffed with grass, they were hard when they were on the ground and made him hot during the coastal summers. He decided that he needed to create something new, something soft and cool. The result was a hammock made from rope.

His design was so strong and comfortable, it survived throughout the years as the Original Pawleys Island Rope Hammock. To this day, you can visit the shop and watch the weavers create the hammocks.

The shop has also grown from just one store, it has turned into a village! The Hammock Shops Village features twenty-three shops and restaurants. These unique shops feature daily international wine tastings, handcrafted collectibles and jewelry, clothes and shoes, and fun gift shops with all sorts of candies and coastal-inspired treasures.
