The South Strand’s beautiful shoreline is set to benefit from a beach restoration project taking place as part of a larger coastal protection effort along the Grand Strand. This work is designed to help preserve the area’s beaches, strengthen storm protection, and support the long-term health of the coastline our guests know and love.
For visitors staying in South Myrtle Beach, Surfside Beach, Garden City Beach, and Murrells Inlet, the good news is that most beach areas are expected to remain accessible throughout the project. Work will move through the shoreline in smaller sections, so any temporary interruptions should be limited.
Beach restoration is a common coastal management practice that helps rebuild sections of shoreline affected by erosion, storms, and tidal activity. By adding sand back to the beach, the project helps create a wider shoreline and a healthier dune system.
These improvements help protect the coast while also preserving the natural beauty and beach experience that make the South Strand such a favorite vacation destination.
Guests visiting the South Strand should still be able to enjoy plenty of time on the beach during their stay.
Construction is expected to move in phases, with work taking place in shorter sections rather than across the entire shoreline at once. That means:
most beach areas should remain open
any closures are expected to be temporary
nearby sections of beach will typically still be available
clearly marked signs and barriers will identify active work zones
designated access points will be provided where needed
Our goal is to help guests stay informed while making it easy to enjoy everything the South Strand has to offer.
This restoration effort is about more than rebuilding sand. It is an investment in the future of the South Strand coastline.
The project will help:
strengthen protection against erosion and coastal storms
support important wildlife habitats
preserve the wide, welcoming beaches guests return to year after year
protect the coastal communities, homes, and businesses that make this area so special
The broader renourishment effort is expected to continue into mid-summer 2026, with work progressing southward in phases. Surfside Beach and Garden City Beach are currently expected to see activity during spring 2026, with nearby South Strand areas potentially affected as the project advances.
Because schedules can shift due to weather and operating conditions, timing may change as work continues.
As with any coastal construction project, safety measures will be in place in active work areas. Guests should follow posted signage and avoid fenced construction zones.
Environmental monitoring is also part of the process, with protections in place for local wildlife, including sea turtles and shorebirds.
