Shark Week 2025: Dive Into the Grand Strand’s Wild Side

Where the Fins Are: Shark Week Adventures Across the Grand Strand

It’s that thrilling time again—when fins take center stage, curiosity turns into action, and the ocean becomes the ultimate celebrity. Shark Week returns July 20–26, 2025, premiering Sunday, July 20 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on the Discovery Channel (available to stream on Max, Discovery+, and Discovery’s other partners)

🌊 What’s Hot on TV

Leading the charge this year is Tom Bergeron, former Dancing with the Stars host, back in action with a twist—he’s hosting “Dancing With Sharks”, an underwater dance competition pairing professional divers with real sharks.

Expect routines like the “Hammerhead Hoedown” and “Tiger Trot,” performed in massive tanks with live sharks swimming just feet away. With dazzling visuals, lighthearted commentary, and a splash of science, this jaw-some new special is set to make waves as Shark Week’s most unexpected hit.

🛍️ Step Into the Shark's Mouth (Literally)

Kick off Shark Week at Jaws Resortwear in Murrells Inlet, where you literally walk through shark jaws to grab beach gear and snag a memorable photo, with a live nurse shark swimming just inside.

Also check out Tsunami Surf ShopEagles Beachwear, and Bargain Beachwear for shark hats, tooth necklaces, swimwear, and more—perfect shark-themed souvenirs.

💦 Surf's Up at Shark Wake Park

Thrill-seekers, rejoice! Shark Wake Park in North Myrtle Beach features one of the East Coast’s largest floating playgrounds, along with cable wakeboarding, kneeboarding, and water skiing—no boat necessary.

 Awesome extras:

  • Shark Camp for kids aged 7–15 (Mon–Fri, 9 a.m.–2 p.m.)
  • Safety instruction with cable systems and a complimentary two-hour pass on completion
  • Group bookings, birthday parties, snack bar, and chill space at “Shark Shack”

🐟 Dive Deeper into Aquarium Adventures

When it comes to shark immersion (without getting wet), few places rival the experiences you’ll find at Ripley’s Aquarium in Myrtle Beach and the South Carolina Aquarium in Charleston.

Ripley's isn’t just a typical aquarium—it's a jaw-dropping spectacle:
  • Dangerous Reef Tunnel | Embark on a winding, 330-foot acrylic tunnel that takes you through a 750,000-gallon tank filled with sharks, sawfish, giant stingrays, tarpon, green moray eels, and turtles.
    • New in 2025: magnificent Great Hammerhead Sharks, each nearly 13 ft long and weighing up to 500 lb, glide overhead, offering a rare, edge-of-your-seat experience.
  • Glass-Bottom Boat Ride | A North American first! Float over the Dangerous Reef with only inches of glass between you and graceful sand tiger sharks. This unforgettable face-to-fin moment blends thrill with education.
  • Ray Bay & Friendship Flats | Touch and feed rays! Multi-level viewing areas offer access to Atlantic, southern stingrays, spotted eagle rays, and even bonnethead sharks.
  • Rainbow Rock & Reef Exhibits | Explore Indo-Pacific coral reefs, which are bursting with species like clownfish, regal blue tangs, Moorish idols, sea dragons, giant octopuses, and jellies.
  • Interactive Discovery Center | Hold horseshoe crabs, participate in educational shows by diving staff or mermaids, and engage with interactive displays for all ages.
  • Unique Experiences | Ripley’s ups the adventure with options like overnight stays (“Sleep with the Sharks”), behind-the-scenes tours, mermaid makeovers, stingray snorkel experiences, Penguin Encounters, and even a new Sloth exhibit.

Just two hours south and nestled on a harbor pier, the South Carolina Aquarium offers a rich marine journey with a strong conservation focus:

  • Ocean Gallery & Great Ocean Tank | Walk from the first to the third floor overlooking a 385,000-gallon deep-water tank—the deepest in North America—featuring sharks, a 220-lb loggerhead sea turtle, massive batfish, southern flounder, and more native marine life.
  • Zucker Family Sea Turtle Recovery Center | Guests can observe real-time rescue and rehabilitation of sea turtles. They can also learn how vets treat injuries, perform surgeries, and prepare turtles for release—a compelling blend of education and conservation.
  • Coastal Plain, Touch Tanks & Aviary | Wander through diverse habitats—from mountain streams and pine savannas to salt marshes—with up-close encounters in touch tanks featuring stingrays, hermit crabs, whelks, horseshoe crabs, and more.
  • Undersea Explorer VR Experience | Embark on a motion-platform VR adventure through shark-filled waters or alongside whales—an immersion unlike anything else.
  • Shark Week Programming | During Shark Week, enjoy curated events, such as dive shows, scavenger hunts, educational stations, shark tooth digs, and more—all of which combine entertainment and learning.

🌊 Why These Visits Matter

Visiting these aquariums isn’t just entertaining—it fosters education, empathy, and conservation. Highlights include immersive tunnels, hands-on ray encounters, turtle rescue transparency, and up-close shark experiences that challenge misconceptions and inspire connection with the ocean world.

🦈 From Followers to Ocean Advocates

Between Myrtle’s high-impact shark tunnel and Charleston’s turtle hospital, these attractions offer unforgettable moments—whether you’re learning, touching, or walking beneath the waves. When Shark Week rolls around, there’s no better way to connect with marine life and deepen your understanding of these vital ecosystems right here on the Grand Strand.

🦈 Shark Lore at Myrtle Beach State Park

Every Wednesday from 3–3:30 p.m., from June 12 through August 14, Myrtle Beach State Park hosts “Sharks!” an educational program at the Activity Center Classroom. Learn shark facts through costumes, models, and real shark teeth. The program is free with park admission.

Bonus: the park offers a one-mile stretch of relatively undeveloped beach, nature trails, surf fishing, camping, cabins, pier access, and a chance to find shark teeth right from the shore.

🔍 Hunt for Fossils & Set Sail

🍤 Bites with a View

After a day of fin-fueled fun, savor fresh seafood:

  • LandShark Bar & Grill (Myrtle Beach boardwalk) offers oceanfront dining, live music, and occasional fireworks.
  • Pier 14 serves "Shark Bites" fried fish, while you dine over the Atlantic—ideal at sunset.

🌅 Shark Spotting from the Shore

Short on time? No problem. Visit the Surfside or Garden City Beach piers—you might glimpse small sharks attracted by local anglers’ bait–drop. It's a serene and down-to-earth way to observe these creatures in their natural habitat.
