As the 1990-1991 President of the Georgetown County Chamber of Commerce, Harrelson created "Leadership Georgetown", a program aimed at developing and enhancing the knowledge and skills of community leaders. In addition, Harrelson arranged a private meeting with President George H. W. Bush to discuss South Carolina's weather-beaten coast following Hurricane Hugo. The West Wing meeting in the Roosevelt Room of The White House focused on the President's portrayal of South Carolina before the National press following the aftermath of the destruction of Hurricane Hugo.
Harrelson was Director of Reagan-Bush Campaign '84 for South Carolina, Fundraising Director for the South Carolina Republican Party, and co-directed successful Congressional campaigns. In addition, he was Director of Santee Cooper Country, a Division of the South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism (PRT), and Director of Public Relations for Wachesaw Plantation on the Intracoastal Waterway in Murrells Inlet, SC.
Throughout his community Harrelson has been involved in activities and organizations, including Rotary International, Boy Scouts of America, March of Dimes' Walk America, United Way, American Cancer Society, South Carolina Crawfish Festival, as well as an active Church member, serving as Deacon Chairman, for which he was named a "Kentucy Colonel."
Cal is a native of the South Carolina Coast. His family moved to the shore in 1924 and his grandfather served as the first Mayor of Myrtle Beach in 1938. As a South Carolinian who has lived in the Midlands, Upstate and along the Coast, Cal appreciates everything South Carolina has to offer. He and his wife, Julie, have one son, who has taken to his Dad's love of hunting, fishing, and taking time to notice the small things in life and in the woods. The family is founded-out whith three Boykin Spaniels, the South Carolina state dog.
