Why the Beach is Good for your Soul

Close your eyes and picture this. You’re standing alone on the beach, your bare feet sinking into the soft wet sand. The wind is softly blowing off the ocean, keeping you cool as the sun penetrates your warm skin. Eyes closed, you lift your head to the sky and as you take in a deep breath of the salty air, the only sound you hear is the waves gently crashing on the shore. As you exhale, you let go of all your stress and give in to the calm and serene environment that surrounds you.
The beach is soothing to the soul. A sufficient dose of nature’s therapy can help anyone relax and take a break from the stresses of everyday life.  It is instant relaxation, no RX needed.
Researchers have said that spending time by the shore shows overall well-being. In fact, according to an analysis of English census data (click here) published in the journal Health Place, those who live by the beach have better physical and mental health than those who live inland.
The combination of the soft sand cushioning your feet, the calming color of blue, and fresh salt air can all trigger your brain to release dopamine and serotonin, chemicals known to make us feel happy and relaxed (click here to read).
I know that for me, spending even one hour on the beach erases any stress or worry I have experienced during the week. It clears my mind and resets my way of thinking
So just remember, regardless of if you’ve been traveling for hours in heavy summer traffic with restless kids or you’ve been stuck in the office all week, just relax, take a deep breath, and know the tranquility of the beach is waiting for you. Take a walk, read a book, soak up the sun, or just sit and listen. Beach bliss is only moments away.
